A Deeper Beauty
In this age of social media, there is an increased pressure for young women and men to look and act a certain way, which conforms to patriarchal perceptions of gender and gender roles. These superficial ideals of beauty are largely unattainable by most without resorting to artificial means, from simple photo filters to extreme body modifications and plastic surgery. The added social pressures based on physical appearance, are linked to an increase in rates of depression, anxiety and isolation.

Left-Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)
I’m may be an artist but I also work in CV surgery, where I work with patients that have had a mechanical heart or a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implanted. A LVAD pump is implanted in the apex of the left ventricle and attached to the ascending aorta. LVADs are intended to treat patients suffering from advanced heart failure. They assist or take over the function of pumping the blood for the heart which has become too weak to effectively pump blood. LVADs restore a sufficient amount of blood flow to suppress heart failure symptoms in these critically ill patients. LVADs may be used as either 1) Bridge to heart transplant candidacy 2) Destination therapy 3) Bridge to recovery of native heart function. This is a more abstract collage showing a heart with a LVAD.

The first in a series of hand cut collages inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526 or 1527 – July 11, 1593), an Italian painter best known for creating imaginative portrait heads made entirely of objects such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, and books.
